Webster City Community Schools

Dorothy Englehart Scholarship

This scholarship is provided as a tribute to Dorothy Englehart with the hope that it will help the recipient to expand their opportunities and enhance their successes by furthering their education. Dorothy Englehart always valued education. She grew up in southeast Missouri during the Great Depression but never had the opportunity to attend college. She and her husband were in their early twenties when they moved to Webster City and started a family. Dorothy saw education as a way for individuals to improve themselves and instilled this idea in her three children. She persevered through some difficult times, making sure that her children were well-cared for and able to attend and graduate from college.

Education continued to play a major role in Dorothy's life. She taught Sunday school for 18 years and worked as the Webster City High School secretary for 25 years. She opened her home as residence for a number of student teachers. Upon retirement, Dorothy assisted adults working toward their GED and volunteered at Sunset Heights Elementary school helping students with reading and math skills. She served as a pen pal for third graders well into her eighties.

Dorothy's children, Paula, LeAnn, and Eddie are thankful for her guidance and support, and hope the recipient of this scholarship will also be encouraged by Dorothy's commitment to education.
